Two faculty and two graduate students from North Carolina State University were planning an international field research experience for the summer 2012. At a global research expo poster session where we presented our ideas to engage with workforce development partners in Jamaica, I learned about Pack For a Purpose from Rebecca. It seemed like a great idea to bring some needed supplies to support the good work being done by our friends Jason and Laura Henzell at Jake’s in Treasure Beach. For the BREDS project, we brought some soccer balls, shoes and an equipment bag. For the Sandy Bank Basic School we brought down a multiplication wall chart, several flash card games, crayons, colored pencils, notebooks, chalk, blackboard eraser, pens and pencils. Upon our arrival, we were treated to a tour of the Breds Treasure Beach Sports Park and learned about how this community is making a difference for the youth of the area through sports and educational programs. Next summer, we will continue our collaboration and support of these projects in Treasure Beach and hope to encourage you to Pack For A Purpose on your next vacation!
