Traveling has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. There is nothing I love more than adventuring out to this huge world and experiencing a different culture, trying new foods, and seeing how other parts of the world live first hand. As much as I love traveling, I am extremely passionate about being a helping hand in the world as well.
I believe it is important for us, as individuals, to realize just how fortunate we are if we have access to necessities like clean water, toiletries, and food. We have to understand that not everyone is as fortunate to live under the same circumstances around the world. Having gratitude and being grateful for the life I live is the reason why I love giving back and helping others.
On behalf of my twenty-fourth birthday, I decided to plan a trip to Peru. Peru is such a beautiful developing country full of life. Machu Picchu in Peru has been on my travel list for years. I consider it to be one of the most beautiful historical sites in the world. I was excited to start exploring South America as soon as I could.
After purchasing my ticket to Peru, I did extensive research about the country and read a quick article on Pack for a Purpose. I went on the site and knew if I could help, I had to. I was so excited that there was a program where I could help and trust me, I couldn’t contain my excitement! I am a chronic over-packer but it didn’t matter, I was determined to bring supplies to help!
I researched locations and chose to donate to project Pas y Esperanza located in Huánuco. Pas y Esperanza provided housing for sexually abused women and children. Due to the location being more of a sanctuary, you couldn’t physically donate the items at the location. Hotel Antigua in Miraflores partnered up with Pack for A Purpose and you are able to bring your items to the hotel where they drop it off.
Once I saw the list of supplies needed, I packed whatever I could. I went on Amazon and ordered little baggies, hairbrushes, pads, toothbrushes, hair ties, coloring books, crayons, and flashcards. I wanted to bring more but unfortunately, my luggage would have torn apart if I over-packed it further.
On July 14th, 2019, my twenty-fourth birthday, I woke up bright and early and walked to Hotel Antigua from my hotel and dropped off the items. It felt incredible to know these items are going to people who need these items and do not have access to them. I don’t know where I plan to travel to next but if there are programs available where I can help, I always will.
My fellow travelers, family, and friends, please consider donating whenever and wherever you can. Traveling can be more than glamorous social media posts.
